I’m overwhelmed with joy and so grateful!

Now, on to studying for Level 2.

Crime drama

I love watching these shows… shows like Criminal Minds, NCIS, CSI, Elementary…. I know  they are full of violence and centre around the same theme. They paint a bleak picture o the world full of terrorists and evil people. But, I guess what I love about these shows are that each episode is self-contained, well mostly, and the fact that they always catch the bad guy in the end. It’s a wonderful break from reality. The storylines are so far from my real life that it’s nice not to have to think about your daily drama. Yeah, I still love a world where Agent Gibbs is my hero!

The last two week have been so gruelling at work. I actually ended up working 15 hours straight, for a few days. I’m burning out and I need a break. Thankfully, things are getting back to normal and 2015 is finally closed (ah yes, there was a spillover effect). So while, I tried to personally put 2015 behind me, work lingered on….

Anyway, from next week onwards, I look forward. I hope I can make change and be more proactive at work, rather than reactive. I have absolutely no idea how I’m going to go about making the change. I guess it’s something to think about.

More often than not, we say that we will make changes but, we just end up falling into the same old rut. Quicker than you know, you go back to your old ways and soon the year is over and you’re making yet another promise to yourself that next year will be different. I don’t want to fall into that trap. I really do want to make some changes to my work life and, I really do want to accomplish things.

Worn out copy

What’s the most worn out copy you have of a book? You know, the one book that you leaf through every now and then. The book that you’ve definitely read more than once. The one book you have to have in your collection and the book that never gets old.

For me, there are a few.

  • Pride and Prejudice – Jane Austen
  • A brief history of time – Stephen Hawking
  • The Sicilian – Mario Puzo
  • The Amphibian – Alexander Belayev
  • Sister of My Heart – Chitra Banerjee Devakurni
  • The Namesake – Jhumpa Lahiri
  • The Catcher in the Rye – J.D. Salinger
  • 1984 – George Orwell

I have a few honourable mentions – a few books titles in my native language, and the Harry Potter series.

Some of these I’ve loved from the first read, and some have grown on me. Either way, these are worn out copies… and I will keep them till they fall apart or I fall apart, whichever comes first.

My Moleskine Story

If you take a walk around my apartment, you are bound to find at least 20 Moleskine notebooks, if not more. They’re all different sizes, formats, and colours. But, if you open up any of the notebooks, you’ll realize that none of them have been used completely. Some are even brand new. I get excited every now and then, go to the store and, buy a Moleskine. I know it’s not a good habit because they are expensive. Somehow I always  manage to convince myself that I need a new one, even though I have bunch of them lying around.

I don’t know why I’ve never been able to finish one. It’s not like I don’t like the paper, but I’m just fidgety. I can’t seem to last that long in one bound notebook. I only buy bound notebooks for my personal journal and Moleskines feel too plain for that.

Anyway, I was doing some spring cleaning a few weeks ago and I found one my notebooks from 2010. I thought about throwing it away but, then decided against it. I decided to try and challenge myself to actually finish the notebook this time. So I’ve started to use it at work. So now half of this notebook has stuff from 2010 and the other half from 2016, which is odd, but fun. It’s ripped and seems to be falling apart a little but, somehow I’m super comfortable using it. So I’m going to stick with it and see if I can get through at least one Moleskine, for once!

Planner update- what’s working right now

If it’s one thing I’ve learned over my years of planning and having planners, it’s that there’s no one thing that works all the time. Sure, planning is a learning process but it’s also a process of adaptation. For a long time, I thought I need to stick one format for a year or for few months at least before it worked and then I realized that’s not true. My work and life changes. There are some weeks that are crazy busy and some weeks that are just plain busy. And all is thought of how to plan and what’s the best strategy was driving me crazy. So now I’m using a process that I feel is working. Who knows it may change tomorrow?

So, what’s working for me right now. 

I have a Filofax Personal and a Moleskine. Here’s how they work:

The FF personal is what I carry with me everywhere. It has MO2P and WO2P for appointments and dates. A few colored pages for personal notes and budgeting. A pages of reference info I have had for the last 5 years and switch from binder to binder. 

The Moleskine serves as my to-do and notes because I feel it’s more accessible. Every week I list everything that comes to my mind with boxes next to it. I color in the boxes if something is half done, like sending an email. If the item is done, I cross it off, like I got a response and the issue is closed. Every week I will copy across everything I couldn’t get done. 

It’s simple and it’s working. I don’t have to remember codes or anything like that. I run through my list twice or even thrice a day. This way I’m always familiar with my list and I don’t have to fret about missing anything. If anything is urgent or has a deadline I put a box  around the item and put it in my FF weekly. 

True this means having two books open on my desk, but it’s helped me save a lot of headache.
